America's Main Street Hotels: Transiency and Co...

John A. Jakle and Keith A. Sculle, two leading experts on the nation’s roadside landscape, examine the crucial role that small- to mid-sized city hotels played in American life during the early decades of the 20th century, a time when the automobile was fast becoming the primary mode of transportation. Before the advent of the interstate system, such hotels served as commercial and social anchors of developing towns across the country. America’s Main Street Hotels provides a thorough survey of the impact these hotels had on their communities and cultures. The authors explore the hotels' origins, their traditional functions, and the many ups and downs they experienced throughout the early 20th century, along with their potential for reuse now and in the future. The audiobook details building types, layouts, and logistics; how the hotels were financed; hotel management and labor; hotel life and customers; food services; changing fads and designs; and what the hotels are like today. The book is published by University of Tennessee Press. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Charles Henderson Norman. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/175784/bk_acx0_175784_sample.mp3. Eddies in Marine Science

It is now well known that the mid-ocean flow is almost everywhere domi nated by so-called synoptic or meso-scale eddies, rotating about nearly vertical axes and extending throughout the water column. A typical mid ocean horizontal scale is 100 km and a time scale is 100 days: these meso scale eddies have swirl speeds of order 10 cm s -1 which are usually con siderably greater than the long-term average flow. Many types of eddies with somewhat different scales and characteristics have been identified. The existence of such eddies was suspected by navigators more than a century ago and confirmed by the world of C. O'D. Iselin and V. B. Stock man in the 1930's. Measurements from RIV Aries in 1959/60, using the then newly developed neutrally buoyant floats, indicated the main char acteristics of the eddies in the deep ocean of the NW Atlantic while a se ries of Soviet moored current-meter arrays culminated, in POLYGON- 1970, in the explicit mapping of an energetic anticyclonic eddy in the tropical NE Atlantic. In 1973 a large collaborative (mainly U. S. , U. K. ) program, MODE-I, produced synoptic charts for an area of the NW At lantic and confirmed the existence of an open ocean eddy field and es tablished its characteristics. Meso-scale eddies are now known to be of interest and importance to marine chemists and biologists as well as to physical oceanographers and meteorologists.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Milo Ray Baughman, Jr., was one of the leading modern furniture designers of the second-half of the 20th century. His uniquely American designs were forward-thinking and distinctive, yet unpretentious and affordable. His prolific and highly influential work continues to be copied, reinvented and revived in the new and secondary decorative arts markets by contemporary furniture designers and dealers alike. Baughman designed for a number of furniture companies starting in the mid-1940s until his death, including Calif-Asia, Mode Furniture, Glenn of California, The Inco Company, Pacific Iron, Murray Furniture of Winchendon, Arch Gordon, Design Institute America, Woodard, George Kovacs, Directional, Henredon and Drexel, among others. He is most famous, however, for his longtime association with Thayer Coggin Inc., of High Point, NC, which began in 1953, and lasted until his death in 2003.

Culture and Psyche

The volume comprises lecture notes on American literature from the mid-nineteenth to the late twentieth century, and on cultural and clinical phenomena, starting with the works of Maria Cummins, William Faulkner, J.D. Salinger and John Updike, and moving to John Barth and DonDeLillo, arriving at rather clinical issues of the postmodern configuration in sexuality, conception, and in bulimia nervosa as a mode of postmodern non-digestibility. Contributions on psychodermatology, circumcision, and prenatal and infant development add to an attempt at integrating aspects of ritual, memory, and time, enlarging the view of subjectivity formation within a given societal structure. The epoch change from modernity to postmodernity seems to go along with quite a questionable narrowing from a culture-based toward a psyche-based view of man. Still it can be argued that postmodernity has severe implications for the human being under the influence of economics and loss of representation, making for existential disarray. The volume s base perspective is a life philosophy-inspired moderate approach of critical theory, with a pinch of post-structuralism, and quite a dash of vitalism.

Exposures

Exposures examines the transformation processes of visual experiences in connection with the discursive contexts and performative processes in the USA since the mid-nineteenth century. Those two crucial aspects and fascinating correlations are understood as equal components of the modernization processes in the USA during the second half of the nineteenth century. The approach to the visual media, in particular, the still young photography, focuses on the repertoire of visualization strategies, the exploration of perceptual processes, and the standard ideas and historically situated anthropological concepts on which the developed and generated images are based. Thus a set of questions is: To what extent does the medium of the daguerreotype become the stage for social action and symbolic operations? Which theatrical qualities are characteristic of these processes, and to what extent does presentation prove to be a means of communication and constitution of representational practices? The central point through the course of the arguments in Exposures is that one dominant mode in the visual culture in nineteenth-century America was the tendency to enclose reality in manageable forms, to contain it within a theatrical space, an enclosed exposition, or an immersion into a visual space, such as the space of a panorama, an entertainment palace, or a photographic picture frame. This book contributes substantially to increasing the understanding of the pictorial turn and the cultural history of the United States of the 19th century.
