The tobacco caterpillar, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) is an important polyphagous pest, infesting crops of major economic importance. During the last 30 years, it has become an increasingly important pest on cotton, groundnut and mungbean. After intensive use of broad spectrum insecticides, S. litura populations have developed high levels of resistance to almost all conventional insecticides.Because of the widespread resistance, there is an urgent need for chemicals with different modes of action and those that do not select for cross resistance to conventional insecticides. Integrating new chemistries into insecticide rotation programmes should reduce selection pressure from a single product or products with similar chemistry and mode of action, thus prolonging the usefulness of all products in Integrated Pest Management. Insecticides with novel modes of action and insect growth regulators have attracted particular interest. This book therefore provides the degree of toxicity of selected novel insecticides and insect growth regulators against S. litura based on the mode of entry and would be highly useful to the post graduate students of entomology and plant protection workers
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a marker of increased risk of cardiovascular events and of poor prognosis in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The prevalence of unknown PAD amongst patients with ACS varies between studies according to the mode of diagnosis.To evaluate the prevalence of peripheral artery disease (PAD), diagnosed using the ankle-brachial index (ABI), in patients ACS with diabetic with or without tobacco user and to assess the profile of these patients, and to determine predictors of PAD.Prevalence of PAD in ACS was low in Bangladeshi population. Patients with PAD and ACS constitute a high risk group and require more attention. PAD with ACS especially STEMI is an independent predictor of in-hospital death.
Mass media is granted as the most powerful tool to aware people about anything, specially about health. WHO says 'Tobacco' kills around 6 million people each year, and more than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke (June,2016). To find how this mass media creates an awareness impact among Bangladeshi people and how it can be used in future to prevent smoking were the principle objectives of the study. This study suggests that mass media can be used as one of the preeminent tool for this smoking matters. Even to disseminate knowledge and information about law and act media can serve as a judicious and sensible tool. But emphasis should be given on mode and language of the messages to disseminate and prioritize specific media-methods and instruments for different area with different people as a sensitive issue.
In this present era of Genomics, the genomes of many different organisms or plant species are already sequenced and some are being sequenced. As a result,a huge repository of unknown genes or genes with unknown functions has developed and functional genomics has to deal with the problems of such unknowns . We have constructed a novel VIGS vector,using the minimal replicon region of the DNA-A component of the geminivirus, Mung bean Yellow Mosaic India Virus (MYMIV). The vector is incorporated between the left and right border region of standard pCAMBIA vector so that the recombinant vector could be delivered into the plant following the usual agro-bacterial infection techniques. The MYMIV-based vector replicated as an episomal entity within 10-15 days past agro-infection in most of the legumes,tobacco and Arabidopsis plants. The silencing efficacy of this vector was demonstrated using GFP as a transgene and PCNA as an endogene. This vector is supposed to silence a large array of endogenes from a wide variety of plants in a fast track and cost-effective mode.
