This book is a modest attempt to provide a detailed overview of the ongoing Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) infection affecting hundreds of individuals annually. Considering the global outbreaks of the syndrome, the authors felt a need to disseminate knowledge among healthcare professionals and the general public about mode of spread of the disease, treatment options and preventive measures. For the sake of convenience, the book is written in simplified language and incorporates a number of illustrations and figures. We believe that this guidelines-based book will cater to the needs of physicians, healthcare professionals, researchers and also to the general public.
This book offers basic concepts of photonic crystal fibers as well as ways of designing such optical properties as chromatic dispersion, nonlinearity, confinement loss, birefringence, and effective mode area. The state-of-the-art of the aforesaid application specific design problems have also been presented. FEATURES 1. Describes the basic concepts of photonic crystal fibers and their optical properties. 2. Reviews the literature for application specific design problems. 2. Presents ways to design near-zero dispersion- flat photonic crystal fibers with modest design parameters. 3. Presents ways to manage nonlinearity, confinement loss, and dispersion simultaneously. 4. Reviews the numerical computation techniques and describes the finite difference time domain method. 5. Presents birefringence tailoring techniques and a way to designing large effective mode area. 6. Describes applications and future of the photonic crystal fibers. This book can either be used as a design textbook or a reference source for both beginners as well as for graduate students.
The dairying is an important source of income and means of employment for large number of people in rural India. Livestock sector plays an important role in generating income and employment, augmentation income of marginal farmers and landless laborers and in meeting nutritional requirement. Livestock and livelihoods are inseparable for the farmers in most parts of our country. Livestock formed a major component of poverty alleviation strategy of the government of India. Another attractive feature of livestock sector in the country is significant employment and income generated by this activity accrues to women which has its own social gains. In India, several studies, both official as well as non-official have been undertaken from time to time with special reference to banking sector at the national level however, in a vast country live India with rural and institute variations, region-specific, micro-level studies are needed. The present published work has made a modest attempt to close the research sap in this area of in these contexts an attempt has been mode in the study to examine.
Statistics are everywhere. Their power and their undoubted efficacy in many areas have given rise to faith in measurement and metrics. More of them will tell us all that we need to know. Their use carries with it a number of presuppositions: that reality can be satisfactorily represented and that it can be controlled or the risks managed. The papers in this book interpret the ethics and aesthetics of statistics in terms of representation, visualisation and accessibility, focus on the appeal of ‘simplicity’, of technical languages, numbers, diagrams and pictures, and pay attention to their connection with action plans. The book explores what has made educational researchers dependent on statistics, and deals with their use in areas such as the prevalence of maltreatment of children, European citizenship, well-being and happiness, illegal migrants, and university expansion. There is discussion of how the quest for more and better statistics finds its voice in policy initiatives that become slogans, and how public opinion polls are used to rationalise political decision-making. Can a more limited and modest use be made of statistics which does not deflect attention away from education’s core business and which does not destroy the local practical knowledge that on which good education is based?‘Smeyers and Depaepe continue to bring together a significant international group of educational philosophers and historians on topics of importance to researchers. This fifth volume in their series takes up the ‘gold standard’ use of statistics in case studies not contributed elsewhere. I highly recommend this text to counter a current over-emphasis on technique in research methodology. Use of statistics remains but herein under new, insightful conceptualizations.’Lynda Stone, Philosophy of Education, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA‘Once again, Depaepe and Smeyers succeeded in bringing together distinguished international and cross-disciplinary scholars exploring very timely and critical issues in current educational research. This is a groundbreaking book on a theme that can’t be ignored by educational researchers and those interested in a better understanding of the culture of science and science as culture. Moreover, the present book instigates to study history of educationalresearch, a limited but developing field, and invites reflection to those who are sometimes too reliant on number crunching as a mode of interpretation and rather credulous in the acceptance of institutional records.Frank Simon, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Ghent University, Belgium
This book is a revision and extension of my 1995 Sourcebook of Control Systems Engineering. Because of the extensions and other modifications, it has been retitled Handbook of Control Systems Engineering, which it is intended to be for its prime audience: advanced undergraduate students, beginning graduate students, and practising engineers needing an understandable review of the field or recent developments which may prove useful. There are several differences between this edition and the first. - Two new chapters on aspects of nonlinear systems have been incorporated. In the first of these, selected material for nonlinear systems is concentrated on four aspects: showing the value of certain linear controllers, arguing the suitability of algebraic linearization, reviewing the semi-classical methods of harmonic balance, and introducing the nonlinear change of variable technique known as feedback linearization. In the second chapter, the topic of variable structure control, often with sliding mode, is introduced. - Another new chapter introduces discrete event systems, including several approaches to their analysis. - The chapters on robust control and intelligent control have been extensively revised. - Modest revisions and extensions have also been made to other chapters, often to incorporate extensions to nonlinear systems.
This book presents a detailed background to the circular economy in China, explores government measures to promote it in China's market economy, and introduces the supporting laws and policies. The book goes on to describe, from a technology perspective, successful circular economy practices in sectors such as agriculture, iron and steel, cement, coal-fired power, chemistry, paper manufacturing and city mineral. This book sheds some light on what China has done and achieved to change the mode of economic development in order to minimize its negative impacts on resources and the environment. Readers will learn from and be inspired by China's circular economy practices. Industrializing countries can also draw on China's experiences to solve their own problems, enabling them to make their economic development resource-saving and more environmentally friendly. If this is achieved, this book can be considered a modest contribution to the sustainability of human society.
